Iberdrola Fenix: new 243 MW photovoltaic plant operational in Sicily Centuripe, Paternò, Belpasso (CT-EN),

Iberdrola Fenix, the new 243 MW photovoltaic plant built between the provinces of Enna and Catania, in the municipalities of Centuripe, Paternò, and Belpasso, has been officially presented. Already connected to the national electricity grid, the plant is capable of generating approximately 400 GWh of energy annually, equivalent to the needs of approximately 140,000 homes. According to data released by Iberdrola, its production will avoid the emission of approximately 119,000 tons of CO₂ annually. A significant portion of the energy produced has already been allocated through long-term PPAs with Italian companies. The site boasts over 413,000 bifacial photovoltaic modules, supported by a network of 26 km of medium-voltage power lines and 9 km of high-voltage power lines. The project was completed thanks to financing from the European Investment Bank, with an Archimede guarantee from SACE. Over 500 workers were employed simultaneously during the construction phase, for approximately 600,000 hours of work without incident, with the involvement of several Sicilian companies in both the construction and operation phases. The presentation was attended, among others, by the Spanish Ambassador to Italy, Miguel Ángel Fernández-Palacios Martínez, and the President of the Specialized Technical Commission for Environmental Authorizations of the Sicily Region, Gaetano Armao. Valerio Faccenda, Country Manager of Iberdrola Italy, emphasized that the project represents an important milestone in Iberdrola’s growth in the country, born “in Sicily and with Sicily,” defining Sicily as a strategic territory for the future of renewables in Europe thanks to its potential and an institutional framework defined as enabling and forward-thinking.
